Where To Walk

The beauty of walking is that is can be done anywhere, whether in the country or urban areas, along roads and pavements as well as rural footpaths and muddy tracks.

Somerset is a wonderful county for walking, as it has varied and beautiful scenery – wonderful coastlines, historic buildings, dramatic hills and easy, flat terrain on the Levels. Somerset County Council maintains a network of over 9,000 rural rights of way totalling 3,750 miles. These include a number of special way marked and long-distance footpaths through some of the county’s finest scenery.

Walks in towns can be just as rewarding, passing historic buildings and interesting shops and streets that you may not notice in a car. It is quick, convenient and sociable. Somerset County Council has produced a series of maps of the main towns of Somerset to help you plan your route.
