Road Awareness For Children

Walking can provide children with valuable life skills by teaching them about road safety and making them aware of the dangers that traffic can pose. Skills learned at this early stage will help to keep them safe throughout their lives.

Green Cross Code

This is a guide to help pedestrians cross roads safely. It is simple and easy to follow. The advice is:

  • THINK - find the safest place to cross then stop
  • STOP - stand on the pavement or near the kerb
  • Use your EYES and EARS - look all around and listen for traffic
  • WAIT - until it is safe to cross. If traffic is coming let it pass
  • LOOK and LISTEN – for when it is safe walk across the road
  • ARRIVE ALIVE - keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross

Kerbcraft

Kerbcraft is an initiative set up for children aged 5 to 7 to teach them fundamental road safety skills, enabling them to be safe, independent pedestrians..

Kerbcraft teaches these main skills:

  • Finding safe places to cross
  • Crossing safely at parked cars
  • Crossing safely near junctions

The Kerbcraft training project has now ended, but a summary of the project and the teaching methods and materials are all available on the Kerbcraft website.
