South West Trains Helps Customers to Get On Their Bikes

South West Trains is helping customers to get on their bikes after launching the UK Rail Network’s first green cycle hire initiative.

The company, which provides rail services to Crewkerne and Yeovil Junction, has teamed up with Brompton Bicycle to encourage passengers to cycle as part of a fully integrated low carbon journey combining bike and train.

So far, the company has invited some of its season ticket holders to take part in a three-month trial of the scheme using Brompton’s folding bikes.

The idea for the scheme followed research involving 13,000 people across the UK, focussing on attitudes to green issues. Health was found to be a significant factor in convincing people to switch from the car to using public transport. With a growing interest in cycling, the bike-hire initiative is designed to make it easier for travellers to make a greener, integrated journey.

Passengers will be able to hire the South West Trains branded Brompton bicycles from the Lost Property Office at London’s Waterloo station. The aim is that people use them for short trips within the city, instead of taking the tube, bus or taxi.
