Wild About Walking
What is it all about?
It is a scheme developed to encourage children (and their parents) to walk to school. It is a reward scheme whereby the children have their ‘Footprints’ card stamped every time they walk to school. After a certain number of stamps they receive stickers (above) and certificates.
Why get involved?
- It is a simple but effective way of encouraging walking
- It promotes healthy exercise and helps keep children and adults fit
- It helps children develop personal and road safety skills
- It can reduce traffic outside the school, reducing pollution and improving safety
- It gives the children the chance to learn and appreciate more about their local area
What does the school need to do?
Not a great deal, we mostly need your enthusiasm. As the teacher takes the register in the mornings, they can ask each pupil how they travelled to school that morning. If they walked, cycled, or ‘scooted’, they have their card marked and this builds up until they have enough to receive a sticker.
We want to get involved!
As soon as you know how many pupils you want to cater for in the scheme, email us at schooltravelplan@somerset.gov.uk or call us on 01823 355124 and we will send you your free Wild About Walking sticker packs.
Why are we promoting it?
As part of the County Council’s commitment to encouraging safe and sustainable travel to and from schools, we see this scheme as a great way of maintaining and encouraging journeys to and from school by foot that can benefit everyone taking part.
Walk Once A Week & Walk on Wednesday
The School Travel Plan Team hold an annual Walk once a Week or Walk on Wednesday (WoW) event where all primary schools are invited to abandon cars on the school run and take to their feet. There are prizes for schools that show the biggest reduction in car use and for the best photograph of the event.
Walk on Wednesday, or WoW, will be held during October 2010 and we will be in contact with schools about participating.
