Park and Stride
Sometimes, pupils may live some way from their school so it’s not possible to walk to whole way. Some schools have developed a Park-and-Stride scheme. This is where they arrange with the owners of a nearby car park to allow parents to park there and then walk the last few hundred metres to school. This could be a pub, a village hall or a church car park, and allows those children using to it still experience the school’s local community and the health and learning benefits of walking. The school should contact the car park owners first to agree before publicising the opportunity to children, parents and carers.
The School Travel Advisor team can give advice to anyone considering setting up a Park-and-Stride scheme.
For more information on how this might work, see our Case Study on Chilthorne Domer School's Park & Stride scheme.
