Cycle Training For Schools
Cycle training is available in schools to pupils aged 9 and above. The training is provided by Somerset County Council, following the government’s “Bikeability” standards for cycle training.
The Bikeability scheme is provided on three levels which build on each other, with certificates available once each level is completed:
- Level 1 - learn to control your bike. By completing Level 1, participants can show they have the skills to ride where there are no cars and that you are ready to start your road training.
- Level 2 - start to deal with real traffic, but sticking to quiet roads. By completing Level 2 participants can show they have the skills to make a trip safely to on quiet roads and cycle lanes, perhaps to school.
- Level 3 - move up to busy roads and advanced road features. It's like driving or motorbike lessons and once participants have done it they should be able to bike most places safely, certainly after some practice. Normally, this training takes place once a child has started secondary school. Somerset County Council do not usually provide Level 3 training as standard, but it can be arranged in some instances.
If you feel your child would benefit from cycle training, but they do not have an opportunity to take part in school-based training, please contact us. We might be able to help you organise something, or put you in touch with a private instructor.
There is also some advice on this site about teaching your child to cycle.
If you’re a parent, guardian, member of school staff, or indeed any adult, and want to brush up your own cycling skills and confidence, we also offer adult cycle training courses for just £5.
