Work From Home Day

Friday 15th May 2009 was Moving Forward's Work From Home Day, encouraging businesses to think about how their staff travel to work.

Moving Forward is doing an ongoing short survey of employers in Somerset to find out what measures employers already have in place to support smarter working.

Working at home, employees and carbon emissions

The CO2 impact of working at home depends on a number of factors, including:

  • the time of the year
  • the length of journey employees normally undertake
  • the nature of work at home and whether this involves computer equipment

However, even working at home once a week will save up to 52 days of shoe leather and the equivalent in ironed shirts or uniforms!

Studies have shown that, on balance, working from home regularly has benefits in terms of potential to reduce congestion and pollution.

The main CO2 emissions at home arise from employees heating the home - dependent on whether or not you have a green energy tariff and the energy efficiency of your heating system and other home appliances you use.
