Cycle and Motorcycle Parking

Cycle and motorcycle parking often causes problems in new developments, but it is very easy to get to get right. Like all physical facilities, it should be included in detail in site drawings so Somerset County Council can ensure that the measures being introduced will be effective - in the right location, easy-to-use and of the appropriate quantity.

SignWe have set out some guidance below, with checklists and detail. This covers spacing and types of cycle parking for different land-uses, including residential developments where having somewhere for all householders to store cycles is a principal requirement. Examples are also provided.

General guidance:

Employment sites:

Residential sites:

  • Cycle Parking Guide for New Residential Developments - Cambridge City Council. Pages 28-30 contain useful dimensions for garages and sheds
  • New Homes 2010 - Secured by Design. Whilst much of the approach in this document in appropriate for promoting sustainable travel (for example reducing permeability within developments), it does contain some useful guidance on storing cycles securely within sheds and back gardens
  • Code for Sustainable Homes Technical Manual 2009 - p89-93 cover residential cycle parking and define what is meant by secure and convenient
  • PRESTO Residential Cycle Parking Information Sheet - [795KB]
