Taunton Park Wins Accessibility Award

Vivary Park in Taunton has notched up yet another accolade - this time in recognition for its easy access.

Vivary, recognised nationally as a fine example of a Victorian park, has won an Accessible Somerset award after being nominated by a member of the public.  The park is already the winner of a number of Green Flag awards.

The park is owned and maintained by Taunton Deane Borough Council which ensures Vivary is open to all users. Smooth paths around the park are a boon to wheelchair users and a new sensory garden is being created.

The Accessible Somerset Awards are organised by Compass Disability Services in partnership with Somerset's local authorities.  The aim of the awards is to recognise those organisations that have made access a priority and provide an excellent service enabling disabled people to shop, socialise and enjoy life to the full.

Vivary Park is constantly being improved to ensure it retains its claim to be the jewel in Taunton's crown.  New developments include the creation of the sensory garden and the redevelopment of the children's play area.

The sensory garden is being planted on the site of the old - and now drained - boating lake.  It is designed for people with sight, hearing, mobility and learning problems and planting will be accessible for those in wheelchairs who will be able to touch and smell the herbs and flowers.

The play area, designed for the pre-teens, is being given a complete makeover and is packed full of exciting features from a raised water play area to tunnels and mounds, a timber and net climbing structure and a basket swing big enough to take several children at a time.

A path through the playground will be smooth - ideal for youngsters learning to ride a bike - and picnic tables will be provided so that families can make a day of a trip to the play area.

Councillor Richard Lees, Executive Councillor for Sports, Parks and Leisure, is delighted that Vivary Park has won the Accessible Somerset Award."It is so important that people of all ages and abilities are able to enjoy a trip to Vivary Park.  It is a wonderful asset for Taunton Deane and the Council is so proud to have won this award."
