Free WiFi on CrossCountry trains

Regular passengers on Cross Country rail services (running N-S through Somerset from Plymouth to Manchester) might have noticed the the introduction of free WiFi services on selected High Speed trains. This is a pre-cursor to a full WiFi service due to be rolled out to all HST and Voyager style trains serving this line over 2012.

This will be excellent news for business and leisure travellers, who will now be able to access the internet more easily for work or entertainment while travelling. Mobile phone signal improvements are also in the pipeline (hopefully not the in Quiet Carriage though).

The commitment to provide WiFi services was part of Cross Country's franchise agreement in 2007, and they have actually been fined twice by the rail regulators for failing to deliver on time. It's good to see that things are finally moving though!
