F1 drives market for greener road cars

Formula One may be used to promote a move to market cars with smaller more efficient engines from 2013.

The sports governing body, the FIA, is making recommendations that could be agreed later this week to move to 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbos with energy recovery (KERS) and fuel restrictions to replace current 2.4-litre normally aspirated V8s.

The turbos and KERS are predicted to lead to fuel savings of 50%, and come at a time when F1 is struggling to attract sponsors who do not wish to be associated with a sport that is seen to waste financial and environmental resources, reports BBC News.
