Green travel with a peach pie twist

Sir Terry Pratchett has unveiled road names named after a fictional world at a new housing development, Kingwell Rise, to be built in Wincanton, Somerset.

Peach Pie Street and Treacle Mine Road are included in the list. The developer, George Wimpey, asked residents to vote for their favourite road name from a shortlist of 14 suggestions made by Sir Terry.

The site is fully supported by a travel management strategy which will ensure that new residents will be given travel alternatives from the day they move in. This has been drawn up in conjunction with Moving Forward and its travel plan team.

Measures that will be introduced include:

  • Cycle storage at each home and secure motorcycle storage for flats
  • New bus shelter
  • Community travel noticeboard
  • Green travel vouchers issued to each household for buying bikes and bus tickets
  • Smarter travel information pack for each household with leaflets from Moving Forward and a dedicated site plan

The travel plan will be monitored annually to make sure it is reducing the number of carborne trips being made by residents. This will reduce carbon emissions and make the development accessible to all types of people including those who do not own a car.

All major developments in Somerset now come with a travel plan. If you are a developer and need to find out more, please visit our dedicated resource at http://www.movingsomersetforward.co.uk/new-developments
