Fuel Type

Petrol is the most common fuel type, followed by diesel. Compared to petrol, diesel vehicles have significantly lower CO2 emissions per kilometre travelled, because diesel engines are more fuel efficient. This makes them economical for travelling longer distances. Diesel engines also last longer reducing the need to repair or purchase a new car.

However, diesel engines are more harmful to the environment than petrol engines for shorter journeys around town. This is because they emit greater levels of Nitrous Oxide and particles than new petrol vehicles, both key players in pollution in urban areas. However, new diesel cars are getting cleaner, and many have the option of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which greatly reduces emissions of fine particles from the exhaust.

There are alternatives to using petrol and diesel. Biofuel and electric or hybrid technology can be more fuel efficient, although other types of pollution or other unwanted impacts can offset this.
