Cycling On Business

Bicycle lockers Cycling is a practical way to travel around on business and should be both permitted and encouraged by employers as part of a travel plan or carbon cutting strategy.

Employers can implement a number of measures to support cycling on business:

  • Providing pool bikes for use by employees. Often these include some folding bicycles, which can be carried on trains and buses to extend their range.
  • Providing bicycle luggage such as pannier bags or rucksacks designed to transport laptops and other office equipment.
  • Organising bicycle servicing for employees
  • Paying a mileage rate for business travel undertaken by private bicycle. Currently up to 20p per mile can be paid without attracting additional liabilities.
  • Providing cycle training opportunities.

Employers have a duty to make sure staff are safe while on business. Cycling on business should be subject to a risk assessment (as for any other mode of business travel) which may highlight procedures that should be adopted by staff or managers when travelling by bicycle, such as wearing high visibility clothing or arranging for the regular servicing of bicycles.
