Cycling To Work

Cycling is a great way to commute to and from work. It is faster and more reliable than driving at peak times in town centres, allows you to get some exercise during your normal day and lets you arrive at work more awake, alert and able to concentrate.

You can travel around 6 miles in half an hour on a bicycle at a moderate speed, meaning that 65% of Somerset’s workers live within 30 minutes cycle commuting distance of their workplace.

Many employers are installing facilities to support cyclists in the workplace, including showers, lockers and enclosed cycle parking. This is great news, but even if your workplace does not have these facilities, cycling to work is still easy for most people. All you really need is somewhere secure to lock your bike and somewhere to hang wet clothes if the weather is bad. As long as you are not trying to cycle at record speeds or for very long distances, you do not need special clothes and will not arrive sweaty or dishevelled.

There are lots of local and national initiatives to support people cycling to work, ranging from discounted bicycle purchasing schemes to free servicing to national events and Bike 2 Work days. Use the links on the right to explore your options.
