Cycling Safely
It is important to note that cycling is a very safe activity. Only one cyclist is killed for every 3 million km cycled. This distance would take the average cyclist 21,000 years to cycle. In addition, the health risks posed by current levels of inactivity outweigh the dangers of cycling by about 20:1.
"The only thing more dangerous than cycling is not cycling."
(British Medical Association, 'Cycling and Health' 2003).
However, there are risks involved in cycling, especially in traffic. This section gives you the information you need to cycle safely and legally and maintain your bicycle in good condition.
It also outlines good cycling etiquette and consideration for other road users.
