About South Somerset Together's travel plan work
LSP Partners based in Yeovil will work with each other and other Yeovil-based companies to identify a range of green travel options that reduce single-person car journeys across the town for work and access to services, and to start one option by 2012.
Draft objectives of the project are as follows:
- Focusing on Yeovil where LSP Partner organisations have a large number of employees, who they can engage and encourage to use travel options other than single car use to travel from their homes in and around Yeovil to work in Yeovil.
- Engaging other Yeovil-based companies in the project, especially those that have agreed Green Travel Plans (whether as part of Planning Consent conditions imposed, or not).
- Developing a recognisable brand for Green Travel in Yeovil and marketing materials.
- Linking with previous and ongoing work to improve accessibility and physical activity in Yeovil such as the UWE/LSP Active and low carbon travel: a transport vision for Yeovil, the Wessex Rail Partnership’s (WRP) feasibility work being carried out and URBED (consultants) plans for the Yeovil Village Urban Extension.
- Learning from good practice elsewhere in Somerset, the UK and Europe on how to develop cost effective green transport options in an urban area, improve people’s health by increasing physical activity and reduce traffic congestion.
- Engaging transport providers in a shared conversation about the needs of organisations in the town, without giving one the commercial advantage over another.
- Identifying the cost associated with supporting car-based operations including expenses claims could fund new greener options instead. Local resources could be directed to enabling one option to be implemented by 2012, with a fully costed action plan produced for future options to be ready for submission to external funding schemes, if/when these become available.
