2010 employee travel patterns

In early 2010, employers helped us conduct a travel survey of staff working in the area. These are the main results from the simple tick-box questions. We are conducting more detailed analysis to feed into the development of an action plan by mid-2010.

The survey closed on 5th March 2010. Winners of the prize draws will be announced here during May.

288 responses in all - around 15% of all staff

The proportion of people mostly arriving by car alone in the survey was 75% - close to the 78% from the counts that were carried out in late 2009. This is reduced to 67% when you take into account occasional journeys by other modes of transport

69% of people said they travelled more than 5 miles to get to work

40% of people coming by car used the M5, mostly from the north (Bridgwater direction)

51% of respondents said they would like to use their car less for commuting

Motivators for change include: fuel costs; new job; house move; congestion; family responsibilities; car availability change (in descending order)

Factors that would encourage change are: flexible working arrangements; ICT enabling more home working; lift sharing journey matching services; bus fare discounts and improved workplace cycle facilities in descending order

28% of respondents said they did more than 50 miles a week by car on business

Generally very low awareness of Traffic England and Transport Direct journey planners

Significant interest in link to rail station - 24% of staff would use it at least once a month for business purposes; less interest in using rail link for commuting – 80% would never use it

11% of staff would use the Henlade Park and Ride if it stopped at Blackbrook; if the Park and Ride were legally available for such uses, 50% would consider using it for accessing the town centre town centre and 27% would promote it for customer or visitor use
